microcollege assessment team

for curricula of the humanities

The process of assessing class syllabi for a microcollege is as follows.

First, a representative of the institution seeking the assessment for the class or course sends a probe email to an Open Latch service representative. The representative gauges the request, and if the requests fits the scope of MATCH, then the institution is asked to provide two copies of the syllabus and all supporting documents pertaining to Open Latch. It is extremely important that these documents be stripped of all identifying markers so that those who assess the material have no indication who is seeking the assessment.

The Open Latch representative then becomes the mediator between the institution and the assessing panel, making sure that the members of the assessing panel and the representative of the institution seeking the assessment remain anonymous to each other. The assessment panel consists of no fewer than two members who have each received an earned Ph.D. in some area of the humanities and who have each taught at a traditional college for a minimum of seven years. The panel examines the material for the proposed class and determines whether it is equivalent to a traditional college class. If so, the institution seeking the assessment may affix the MATCH logo to the title of the course, thereby advertising the fact that the course has been deemed college-level.

It is important to understand that MATCH examines only class or course syllabi, not degree programs or colleges themselves.
